Since May 1999 he has headed one of the UK's largest advertising and communications groups, whose clients include Ford, Unilever, Glaxo SmithKline, Kodak, IBM and Nestlé.
But Paul Simons once spent five years performing in a rock band. His band, The Chances Are, was spotted by a record label scout during a gig and then landed a contract at Abbey Road, the Beatles' former recording studio.
Mr Simons spent five years on the road, playing guitar and supporting pop groups such as The Who, Small Faces, and Ike and Tina Turner. But after hearing Eric Clapton in concert he decided he would never be as good - and quit.
He then studied for an MBA and went into brand management at Cadbury's and United Biscuits. But it was in advertising that Mr Simons found his calling and, in 1988, he set up his own agency, Simons Palmer. He is best known for his campaigns for Sony PlayStation, Nike, Goldfish, The Sun newspaper and Virgin.
