INTERACTIVE GAME: You Be Chancellor

This game lets you be chancellor of the exchequer for a day. Read on to learn what to do, then click the You Be Chancellor button below to play.

We have divided the government's budget into its main spending and revenue components. Your task is to tweak, tax and fiddle with the figures.

When you are satisfied that the revenue and expenditure plans are in line with your spending philosophy, we'll work out how big a surplus or deficit you would run. You'll be able to revise your figures if you have made any blunders - or think that your spending plans will put you out of favour.

There are two versions of the game. The first gives you a free rein to play with the government figures. The second lets you use a revenue worksheet, drawn up by a virtual army of civil servants, that has a range of revenue raising options.

The data used to estimate the revenue effects or tax changes is derived from official sources, but please remember that, while we have made all efforts to ensure accuracy, You Be Chancellor is a game and is not intended to be a detailed economic model.
