First steps in CRM

Your question: I'm looking at setting up my own business and I want to ensure that I have an effective system for managing my customer contacts right from day one. I am also concerned to get a system that can be easily adapted or upgraded if the business changes or expands. What would you recommend as a 'first step' CRM set-up for a new business?

Firstly BT SME have a web site developed to assist new business start-ups that can be found at www.bt.com/getstarted You may like to consider PC based software that can capture and manage information about your customers relating to enquires from sales and service areas. It can also be used to assist in the development of marketing campaigns using the data stored within to ensure your campaign activity is targeted to the correct customer profile. Some products also include a reporting suite to enable you to track sales results and productivity. As your organisation grows this can be integrated with call centre equipment or Computer Telephony Integration enabled.
