As British business faces uncertainty, and possibly a downturn in 2002, companies of all sizes are asking themselves what they can do to maximise their chances of success. What options are open to organisations when all costs have to be carefully scrutinised? A panic reflex of downsizing staff and technology is unlikely to provide a long-term solution – in fact it may cause more harm than good. What’s more, there are often other options. A considered scrutiny of all areas of a business can reveal cost-saving practices that result in the least disruption to staff and customers.

An example of one such tactic is empowerment of staff. Having an agile and efficient workforce with decision-making capability can result in substantial savings, as it makes effective use of resources, including technology.
