The FT 100 league table published today for the fourth year provides an employer orientated snapshot of university performance across 16 categories.

The figures have been drawn from published statistics, which have been collected by government and official agencies and from a survey of graduate recruiters run in conjunction with AGR.

The HESA data covers the 1998/99 academic year while the UCAS data is from the 1999/2000 academic year.

The various agencies played no part in compiling the table and cannot be held responsible for any of the inclusions drawn from the statistics. The FT 100 table measures performance on a relative - not an absolute - basis. The top university is awarded a maximum of 100 points and the rest receive a proportion of this figure. The table shows actual - rather than the relative - scores. The categories are weighted according to importance and the following are explanations of the criteria used to form the FT score.

  • A-level points: The average UCAS points held by first year students (HESA).

  • Applications to places: The total number of applications to degree courses against the total applicants accepted (UCAS).

  • Student/Staff (total) ratio: The average number of students to each member of the faculty (HESA).

  • Research: The average of the marks achieved during the most recent nation-wide research assessment exercise (RAE).

  • Teaching: The average of the marks achieved in the most recent teaching assessments (QAA, HEFCW and SHEFC).

  • 1st class: First class degrees as a percentage of all classified degrees (HESA).

  • Employment: A weighted combination of the percentage of graduates entering full-time employment and the universities targeted by graduate recruiters (HESA, FT-AGR).

  • Percentage of graduates entering professional training (HESA).

  • Percentage of graduates entering higher degree (HESA).

  • Percentage of postgraduate (research): Postgraduate research students as percentage of total students (HESA)

  • Percentage of postgraduate (taught): Postgraduate taught students as percentage of total students (HESA)

  • Income from industry: Total income from industry (HESA).

  • Income for Industry/FTE: Income per full-time equivalent faculty (HESA).

  • Income for research/FTE: Income per full-time equivalent faculty (HESA).

  • Computer expend.: Gross expenditure on central non-administrative non-library institutional computers (HESA).

  • Computer expend/FTES: The above figure on a per student basis (HESA).

  • Library expenditure: Expenditure on all library and learning resource centres (HESA).

  • Library expend./FTES: The above figure on a per student basis (HESA).
