Background: Archbishop Desmond Tutu is one of the leading figures in the fight against apartheid, and the subsequent reform in South Africa. He was chosen by President Mandela in 1996 to chair South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, that investigated the crimes committed by all sides during the apartheid regime.

Desmond Tutu became the first black man to be Anglican Dean of Johannesburg's St Mary's Cathedral in 1975, and was made Bishop of Lesotho in 1976, and in 1978 he became Secretary General South African Council of Churches. and in 1984 won the Nobel Peace Prize for his quest for a peaceful end to apartheid in South Africa. He became Bishop of Johannesburg in 1985, and Archbishop of Cape Town and head of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa in 1986

His early career was as a high school teacher, and he lived in England, with his family between 1962 and 1966 working a s a curate and earning a BD and Master’s Degree in Theology. He has now taken up a position as Visiting Professor at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in the USA.
